Malaysia One Health University Network (MyOHUN) continues its commitment to strengthening capacity building in biosafety, biosecurity and bio risk management among the current workforce in Malaysia. In line with this mandate, MyOHUN organised the Bio Risk Management (BRM) Training for PETRONAS SKG 23 Applied Science (Biology) in December 2025 as part of ongoing efforts to enhance awareness, knowledge and competency in managing biological risks in laboratory and

research environments.

The BRM Training was designed to provide participants with structured exposure to key components of bio risk management, including biosafety, biosecurity, regulatory compliance, biological risk assessment, mitigation strategies and emergency response. The training also aimed to reinforce good laboratory practices and promote a strong culture of safety and responsibility when handling biological materials.

The two-day training was conducted on 16–17 December 2025 at Marriott Hotel Putrajaya. The training programme was facilitated by four (4) speakers, who are subject matter experts in biosafety, biosecurity, and bio risk management from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Malaya (UM).

The objectives of the training were:

(a) To introduce fundamental concepts of biosafety, biosecurity and bio risk management

(b) To enhance participants’ understanding of biological risk assessment, mitigation and regulatory compliance

(c) To improve awareness and application of good laboratory work practices, personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency response procedures

(d) To evaluate participants’ learning outcomes through pre-assessment and a final BRM assessment conducted via the PUTRAMOOC platform.

A total of 22 participants from PETRONAS SKG 23 Applied Science (Biology) attended the training. The participants comprised personnel involved in applied science and biology-related functions, particularly those engaged in laboratory and research activities that require effective bio risk management practices.

The training was successfully conducted and achieved its intended objectives. Participants actively engaged throughout the sessions and demonstrated improved understanding of key bio risk management principles. The final BRM assessment, administered via PUTRAMOOC, was used to evaluate participants’ overall competency and completion of the training. Feedback received

indicated that the training content was relevant, practical and beneficial in supporting their professional roles and responsibilities.

Overall, the Bio Risk Management (BRM) Training with PETRONAS 2025 contributed positively towards strengthening biosafety and biosecurity capacity among PETRONAS personnel, while reinforcing MyOHUN’s role in promoting a competent and sustainable One Health workforce.
