Short Bio
I am a Professor in Medical Microbiology at the Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM and Deputy Director (Clinical Support) and Consultant Clinical Microbiologist at Hospital Pengajar UPM. I have more than 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and I am also supervising postgraduate students and the training of medical doctors who will become clinical microbiologists. I completed my medical degree (MBChB) in 1999 and Master of Higher Education, in 2016, at University of Otago, New Zealand. I completed my specialist training as a clinical microbiologist at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2009 (equivalent to Doctor of Pathology). My research interests include pathogenesis of infections, host-immune response, and infection control. I am also into medical education and health communication. I have experience collaborating with professionals from multi disciplines, where we work together to solve problems in clinical microbiology. I have led projects amounting to more than RM1 million. As a former head of the department, I led my department members in the setting up of a molecular laboratory at Hospital Pengajar Universiti Putra Malaysia for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 and genomic sequence of SARS-CoV-2 and multiresistant bacteria. I am also active in professional societies such as BactiVac Network (UK), Malaysian Society of Infectious Diseases and Chemotherapy and College of Pathologists, Academy of Medicine Malaysia. I am an expert contributor to a document for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, on Group B Streptococcus in freshwater fish.
