Short Bio
Professor Dr. Wong Mui Yun is a professor of Plant Pathology and Biotechnology at the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Currently, she is the Deputy Director of Institute of Plantation Studies, UPM. She obtained her PhD from North Carolina State University, USA in 2004. She has an extensive international research experience as a visiting scientist to Cornell University, USA (2009-2010), Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan (2014), University of California Riverside (UCR), USA (Fulbright 2016-2017), CIRAD, Montpellier, France (2017) and the Environment and Plant Protection Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (EPPI-CATAS), Hainan, China (2019). She received the Distinguished Women in Agricultural Sciences 2020 Award given by the Center for Advanced Research and Design, Venus International Foundation, India, and Fellow Award 2022 by the Asian PGPR Society for Sustainable Agriculture. She serves in the Board of Studies, Department of Botany, Alagappa University, Karaikudi, India (2019-present) and Advisory Board, School of Agriculture, SAGE University, Bhopal, India (2020-present). She was the recipient of the highest award at the university level, the Vice Chancellor Fellowship Award (AFNC) 2017 in Best Journal Publication (category Science & Technology) for her research contributing to advancement of knowledge in defense responses of oil palm against Ganoderma basal stem rot disease in relation to phenylpropanoid pathway. She has supervised close to 90 undergraduate and postgraduate students, published close to 180 research papers in national and international reputed journals, proceedings, books, and book chapters as well as a pending patent for a biocontrol product and two copyrights. She received several medals at both national and international research and innovation expositions. She contributed as invited and keynote speakers in numerous national and international scientific conferences and forums. She serves in the editorial board of three international peer-reviewed journals (Journal of Rubber Research, Indonesian Journal of Plant Protection and Gene Reports) and an ad-hoc reviewer for many international reputed journals. Recently, she had served as the Guest Editor for a Special Issue in Journal of Rubber Research. She sits in a couple of working committees at the national level including Working Group on Development of Biofertilizer Standard and Jawatankuasa Standard Kebangsaan Berkenaan Pertanian (NSC A) (National Agriculture Standard), both under the Department of Standard Malaysia as well as in council of various national and international plant protection-related professional societies. She is also actively engaging with the communities and industries by providing plant disease diagnosis and consultancy services in disease management to the public, small-scale farmers and plantations besides contributing her expertise in the main stream news portals. Her research focuses on Molecular Plant Pathology (plant-microbe interactions and induced resistance) of plantation and food crops as well as innovative strategies for sustainable crop protection.
